Wrestling Team Places Fifth At Season-Opening National Catholic Invitational

At the season-opening National Catholic Invitational Saturday at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, John Carroll overcame its own injury depleted roster that prevented representation in three weight classes to place fifth in the seven-team field.

JCU senior Ben Adams went 3-0 and captured the 184-pound weight class. He overpowered all three opponents, pinning two and recording a technical fall against the other. he won his final with a fall at 4:04 against Ryan Sula of Duquesne.
Four others earned top four finishes for the Blue Streaks. Kevin Nycz went 2-2 and finished fourth at 133 pounds, Greg Ryan was fourth at 141 in his JCU debut, Connor Suba was 3-1 and finished third at 157 pounds, and James Nemunaitis had an identical record and his third-place effort at 197 pounds.
Notre Dame (OH) won the team title with 139.5 points, edging host Gannon with 127.5 points. Mercyhurst (88.5), Seton Hill (83.0) and John Carroll (73.0) rounded out the top five.
JCU did not have wrestlers at 125, 174 or 285, but the 14 wrestlers who did make the trip finished the tournament with a combined 22 victories.
