Depth proved to be a powerful weapon this weekend for the John Carroll men's swimming and diving program, as strength in numbers added up to a title at the 2009 Carroll Classic.

In the two-day event staged at the William H. Johnson Natatorium, John Carroll would score 1177 points to finish well ahead of Notre Dame College (755) and Malone University (220).
John Carroll scored several victories over the course of the competition. Eric Davis powered to a win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.94. while Brendan Carey did the same in the 400 IM (4:43.04.)
Jimmy Ranallo won in the 200 Free(1:48.24) and the 1650 Free (17:20.17), while
Melvin Vazquez was a double winner as well in the 100 Breast and 200 Breast (1:07.54) and the 200 Breast (2;23.87)
Blake Pinchot swept the Backstroke events, winning the 100-yard race in 57.11, and the 200 race in 2:07.30.
Senior
David Essi, who is graduating this month, completed his collegiate career by sweeping the diving competiton. He won the 1-meter event with 352.80 points, and on the 3-meter board with 380.03 points.
JCU won four of the five relays. In the 400-yard medley relay Friday night, the quartet of Pinchot, Vazquez, Davis and
David Perchinske won race handily in a time of 3:46.12. The same foursome won the 200-yard race Saturday morning in 1:43.04.
In the 800-yard Freestyle Relay, a time of 7:33.29 was good enough to win by over 30 seconds, and was turned in by Ranallo,
Nick Grady,
Drew Edson and Davis. In the meet-ending 400 Free Relay, Ranallo, Perchinske, Davis and Edson produced a nail-biting win in a time of 3:21.84 -- just over a half-second ahead of second-place Notre Dame.
