Moran Coach of the Year, Four Blue Streaks On All-OAC Team As Conference Men's Basketball Awards Announced

Mike Moran picked up his fifth Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award and four of his players earned all-league recognition as the 2010 All-OAC Men's Basketball Team and special award winners were announced Monday.

Moran guided John Carroll to its second consecutive OAC regular season title in its ninth overall in his 18th season at the helm. JCU won its final ten regular season games to post a 15-3 record to win the title by a full two games over runner-up Wilmington College.

Moran has a record of 328-168 overall and an OAC mark of 219-109 in his tenure as John Carroll head coach.

Senior Rudy Kirbus and sophomore Corey Shontz were selected as first team All-OAC honorees for the 2009-2010 season. Senior Chris Zajac and sophomore Matt Crozier earned honorable mention status.

Kirbus, the lone four-year starter on this year's team, surpassed the 1,300-point mark for his career this season. He led the team in minutes per game (22.5) and was second in both scoring (13.0) and rebounding (4.8). Kirbus was fourth in the OAC in three-point field goals made per game (2.12) and tenth in three-point field goal percentage (.417).

This is the second consecutive year in which Kirbus was named first team All-OAC.

Shontz was named first team All-OAC for the first time in 2009-2010. The team's leading scorer (14.3 ppg), Shontz was fourth in the OAC in both assists (3.73) and steals (1.96) per game, and his scoring averaged was eighth best in the league for a team that topped the conference and is ranked third in the nation with 88.7 points per contest.

Zajac earned honorable mention all-conference status for the second consecutive year after leading the league in assists-to-turnover ratio (+2.22) -- a number that also ranks 33rd in all of Division III. Zajac also stands fourth in the OAc in steals (1/96) and seventh in assists (3.15).

Crozier earned a spot on the All-OAC team for the first time in his career. The team's top rebounder (7.3 rpg) also ranked fourth in the OAc in that category. he was also seventh in field goal percentage (.569) and ninth in blocked shots (0.65).

John Carroll, with an overall record of 20-6 and champion of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season, is making its 12th appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament and its sixth in the last eight years

Starts in 13 Games For JCU
In the year of 1999, John O'Rourke started in 13 games on the year.
In five seasons the men's soccer team went undefeated in the OAC.
In 2009, Kasey Schwing ran the 100 meter running a record time a 10.80 in outdoor track.
Two players in JCU wrestling history had 122 wins. Joe Schmidt in 1987-90 and Mark F. Hawald in 2002-05.
Men's Basketball Team Drops 137 Points

On November 18, 2005 the Blue Streaks put up 137 points vs. Emory & Henry. Between both schools they combined for 264 points. Emory & Henry scored 127 points.  

The Shula Years
In 1948, legend Don Shula has the best rushing average in a season with 6.6 yards a carry for John Carroll.
Taseff Used to the Endzone
In 1950, Carl Taseff had 20 rushing touchdowns in a single season. 
Dissel Puts Up Set Assist Record
In 1996, Leslie Disel had 1,302 set assists in a season. 
McDaniels Suceeding in the Pro's

 Josh McDaniels who played at JCU in the 1990's is the head coach for the Denver Broncos and was part of three Super Bowl wins when with the New England patriots. 

The JCU wrestling team have won ten OAC championships and tying a league record for most crowns by a school.
Jerry Angel in the 2003-04 season attempted 199 three pointers.
In the 2003-04 season the JCU men's basketball team scored 2,553 points on the year.
Ken Rehmer had the highest free throw percentage at .915 in the 1976-77 season.

The men's soccer team in 1993 posted a 17 win season.

 Men's and women's swimming and diving team, over 200 Blue Streaks have earned individual OAC titles.

In 1983 and '84 John Magyari had eight complete games on the year.
Wideikis and Recko Suit up
Jim Wideikis and Craig Recko played in the most games in a season dressing for 43 games as a Blue Streak in 1998.
Bertolone Pins 15 on the Season
Most pins in a season was 15 by Joe Bertolone in the 1974-75 season.
Shutting Out Opponents

From 1993-95 Angela Rochowiak had 17 career shutouts throughout her playing career at JCU.

In 1996-97 season Jimmie Lake went 23-0 in untied dual meet seasons.
In 2006, the woman's tennis team set a record of 20 dual match wins.
Feeling good to be a Winner
Most victories in a season was 35 by Dan Stefancin in the 1980-81 season.

The women's basketball team throughout the years has had four of the program's nine 1,000-point scorers graduated over the last eight years.

Healthy as Ever
In Molly Ridenour's volleyball career at Carroll she played in 475 games from 1995-1998.
JCU On The National Stage
On March 20, 2004 the JCU men's basketball team beat Amherst 96-85 and brought home third-place in the NCAA Division III Championship and was the best finish in JCU basketball history.
An Offensive Machine
Quarterback Tom Arth from 1999-2002 threw 89 touchdown passes in his John Carroll college career and just in a season in 2000 he had a remarkable 31 TD passes thrown. 
Scafe Coaches a Twelve Win Season
In 2002,  head coach Regis Scafe tacks up 12 wins on the year.
Mary Ann Montagne in her playing career had 241 service aces from 1986-1989.
2003-04 Season of Dreams
In the 2003-2004 season the John Carroll Blue Streaks set a school record with 27 wins.
Stephanie Gianni made 40 consecutive free throws that lasted from 12/2/00 to 1/6/01.
In 1986-87 season JCU wrestler Jason Barnett posted 40 victories on the year.
Ace of Spades
As a team, in 1988, the lady Blue Streaks had 316 service aces in one season.
In 1993, the men's soccer team had 59 goals on the year.
Football was added in the fall of 1920, and by 1923, the St. Ignatius College name eventually was switched to John Carroll University.
Going Yard
From 1996-99 Wideikis hit 22 home runs when at Carroll.
In 2004, Greg Adams ran in the 800 meter relay setting a record time 1:51.54.
In the 1952-53 season George Dalton scored 669 points on the year.

In 1993, The JCU Volleyball team posted a 34 win season.

In 1999, Jill Comerford scored 17 goals on the season.
In 1998, Balish, Proy, S. Spentoff, and Herald ran in the 4x200 relay and set a record time 1:32.97.
Barrett Rushes Over 1,000 yards in '74
Tim Barrett in 1974 set a milestone season rushing for 1,409 yards on the year.
Deep To Left Field
On April 23, 2003, John Carroll sophomore Eric Floriani became the first NCAA Division III baseball player to hit a home run at the home of the Cleveland Indians, Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field). His memorable shot was a two-run home run over the left field wall in a 9-2 victory over Mount Union.
In 1991, Pablo Ramirez scores 23 goals on the season.

Carl Taseff in 1950 scored 23 touchdowns in a single season.

Wrestler Ed Floyd had 36 pins in his career from 1970-73.

In a full season, John Magyari in 1982 had a 1.90 ERA.

In the 1999 season pitcher B.J. Brown struckout 52 batters placing him second on the team.

Craig Huffman scored 79 three point field goals in the 1988-89 season.
Dale Masino in 1965-66 had the highest rebounding average with 13.2.

  In 1994, Ryan Haley averaged 42.8 yards a punt.

Eric Biro in 2001, in the 200 meters set a record running 22.70 seconds.

John Carroll has had 14 Academic All-OAC winners in the last ten years in volleyball.
In 1996, Grant Mast had a season 197 saves.
The women's swim team won six consecutive years as conference champions from 1986-1991.
Joan Of Ace
In the 1988 season Joan Maurizi had 83 of the 316 service aces on the year.
Eleven All-Americans have played for the JCU men's team since 1994.
Michael Lyons in 1991 had nine shutouts on the season.  In his career he had 27 shutouts through a span from 1991-94.

Brian Unk who is a JCU grad was the Jack Nicklaus/ Rolex Division III Golfer of the Year and currently plays on the Canadian Pro Tour. 

In 2007, the women's JCU golf team came in second place in the OAC Championship.
Head coach Kerry Volkmann was inducted into the Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003.
On the season in 1993, Pete Duggan stats up 14 assists.  in his career from 1990-93 he had 40 assists.
The men's tennis team has placed eight players on the All-OAC team over the past five seasons and one OAC Player of the Year.

In 1998, Jim Wideikis hit 11 homeruns in a season for John Carroll.
In 1987, Leo Miller set a record in the high jump with a 6'11'' leap.
Juliana Klocek in the 1988-89 season shot 130 free throws.
In 1975, the JCU wrestling team won a national collegiate title as Division III Champions.
in 2006, men's swimmer White set a school record in the 100 fly with a remarkable time of 52.28.
In the 1996-97 season the JCU Wrestling team had 21 wins that year.
The men's golf team were tournament champions in 1990, 1994, 1995, and 1997, and were OAC regular season champions in 2009 and 2010.

The JCU women's swimming and diving have won 16 of the last 21 OAC titles and the men won 13 of the last 21 crowns. 

Stacey Mullally had 1,950 kills through 1991-1994.

Men's & Women's swimming and diving coach Matt Lenhart and the team crowned their first men's swimming national champion and first women's national diving champion during Lenharts coaching career.

In 1954-55 John Keshock grabbed 270 rebounds on the year.
In 2000, Richard Johnson set a shot put record throwing 50'9".
Beth Cooper set an assist record of 3,468 during her four years at JCU from 2000-2004.
In 2010, the women's tennis team were a semifinalist for the OAC Championship.
Terry Schaefer in the 1976-77 season averaged 31.1 ppg.
Ali Kazemaini was a back to back regional coach of the year in 2000 and 2001.
Men's swimmer Shay set three records in 2001 coming in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free with record times of 21.11 in the 50, 46.35 in the 100 free, and 1:41.74 in the 200 free.

On October 3, 1996, the Blue Streaks netted 10 goals vs. Lake Erie. 

What a Career
Jim Weir had the highest individual winning percentage in his career at .904 form 1975-78 and carrer wise at JCU he posted a .930 winning percentage.
The JCU men's golf team has qualified for the NCAA Championships five times in program history and placing in the top ten four times.
Katie Benjamin in her career at JCU had 871 rebounds from 2000- 2003.
Offense Averages Out
In 1998, JCU had a team batting average of .316 on the year.
Since joining the OAC, the Blue streaks have captured 13 league titles.  The men have won five titles and the women have claimed eight championships.
Seven guys in the 2003-04 season played in 33 games.
A Historic Year For Women's Soccer at JCU
In 1999, the women's soccer team had 13 wins on the year which was a season record.
Shayla Bell scored 498 points in the 2004-05 season.

As a team, in the 1955-56 season they had the highest scoring average with 90.4 points.

In 2006, Cyril Pinchak set a record in the mile run with a time of 4:17.51 in indoor track & field.
