2010 Fall Sports Preview: Lesser Known Blue Streak Women's Soccer Roster Belies Talent

Rachel Grdina (#6) and Colleen Harmon (#15) will keep the Blue Streaks on the offensive in 2010
When honing in on what the 2010 campaign may bring for her John Carroll Blue Streaks, 13th year head coach Tracy Blasius admits any answer would be a guess at best.

“I am not sure what to truly expect,” said Blasius. “There would not be a direction this team could take that would overly surprise me. Obviously we are preparing for a very positive season, and we certainly have the players and the talent to make that happen, but we also have some questions we need to answer.”

Blasius returns seven starters from a team that finished in third place in the OAC regular season, but gone are four starters that logged 295 matches between them. Finding replacements for the likes of all-region player Caitlyn Walton and all-conference selections Lauren Marchioni and Elizabeth Daigler will be the among top priorities for the 2010 Blue Streaks.

Blasius does not have worries about her keeper, as senior Molly Gradowski(0.94 GAA, 116 saves) is coming off an all-conference campaign. Defensively, Lauren Gregorzewski, Mari O'Neilland Clare Wellott will bring stability to a unit that allowed just three goals in nine regular season league matches.

The midfield will be where graduation losses are most felt. Sophomore Kristen Profeta and seniors Aleks Quenneville, Alicia Sovacool , Valerie Korb and Kasey Eckman all have experience to bring to the table. Junior Eleanor Sovacool returns after a one-season hiatus to add depth to the unit.

Two-year starters Rachel Grdina (four goals, ten points) and Colleen Harmon (two goals, four points) as well as three-year letterwinner Betsy Haigh (21 career points), are threats up front.

Emerging talents like sophomore Amanda Buxton and several members of a strong freshman class will make JCU a team to be reckoned with this fall.

"I really love the way this team works together and competes from start to finish," said Blasius. "They are just a great group to coach, and if there is any justice, their efforts will be rewarded."
