The good news: John Carroll won 16 of the 29 bouts actually contested today.

The bad news: Forfeits cost six points.

As ventures go, the John Carroll Wrestling Duals held today at the DeCarlo Varsity were successful in about every way except the won-loss record of the team. 

John Carroll opened the day with a 33-15 victory over Washington & Lee to give head coach Mark HAwald his first victory as the Blue Streaks mentor. But the rest of the day failed to yield another team win as JCU lost in succession to Wheeling Jesuit (27-15), Thiel (27-24) and St. Catharine (29-15). In the Thiel and St. Catharine matches, the Blue Streaks had to start in an 18-0 hole due to injuries that forced forfeits at 125, 133 and 141 pounds.

Despite the won-loss record, several individuals had strong showings, led by Thomas McNulty at 174 and Will Porter at 285. McNulty went a dominating 4-0 with three pins and a technical fall, while Porter also went 4-0 with a pin, a major, and two decisions in his first action since the 2013-14 campaign.

Also turning on solid performances were Tyler Hardtke, 3-1 at 165; John Connick, who was 2-0 at 149 pounds before takinga  tough loss at 157; Blake Dixon, who was 2-1 at 157; and Russ Porter, who was 2-2 at 197 in his first collegiate competition.
