Walton, who was given the nickname "Crazylegs" during his playing days, was the leading rusher on John Carroll’s first ever unbeaten, untied football team. Walton led the squad with 484 yards in 1957 and with 484 yards again in the perfect 1959 season.
Walton still holds the school record along with Don Shula for the most yards per carry (6.6) in a single season. He graduated with 1,100 career rushing yards, at the time the fifth-highest total in school history. Two-time All-PAC selection at halfback.
He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1960.
Walton spent 1960-62 with the Fort Eustis Avery Wheels, who won the National Armed Forces Championship in 1961. Leading rusher and pass receiver in 1962 for the Wheels and was named Captain and Most Valuable Player.
