Porter was captain of the first PAC champion football team at John Carroll in 1957.

An honorable mention All-Ohio player in both 1956 and 1957, Porter was a stalwart two-way starter for the Blue Streaks. In his two varsity seasons at John Carroll, Porter helped the Blue Streaks post a 10-2-2 record.

He earned first team All-PAC honors as an offensive tackle in his junior and senior seasons.
