A two-time first team All-American, Gerry Shay saved his best swimming for last. At the NCAA Division III Championships, Shay placed sixth in the national finals of the 50 Free and 8th in the 100 Free. The previous year, Shay had been an honorable mention All-American in three events -- the 50 free (13th), 100 Free (12th) and 200 Free (15th);
The 1998 OAC Swimmer of the Year, Shay was a 19-time OAC Champion, earning that distinction in 12 relay (never swam on a relay that did not win a league title) and seven individual events. He was also the runner-up in two other individual events. In all, Shay won OAC titles in five different events as he helped John Carroll win OAC team titles in 1998, 2000 and 2001.
Among Shay's team awards were Most Valuable Swimmer in 1998 and 2001, Most Improved Swimmer in 2000 and four school records set during his time at JCU.
