Gretchen Weitbrecht served John Carroll in a variety of capacities during a 27-year career. Weitbrecht arrived in 1990, coming aboard as head coach for volleyball and softball, and finishing as the winningest coach in program history for both sports. Following an Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title in 1992, JCU Volleyball enjoyed a 1993 season filled with historic firsts in 1993, including: first OAC Tournament Championship, first women’s team in school history to make the NCAA Tournament, first team (male or female) to host an NCAA Division III playoff event on campus, and first to win an NCAA Tournament game. In 12 years as volleyball coach, Weitbrecht finished with a record of 224-117 (.657). She was the 1993 AVCA All-Midwest Region Coach of the Year and the OAC Coach of the Year in 1992, 1993, and 2001. In softball, Weitbrecht notched 264 career wins from 1991 to 2007, and led the program to its first OAC Tournament appearance in 2003. From 2002-04, Weitbrecht served as Senior Women's Administrator and Interim Athletic Director. JCU captured the OAC Men's All-Sports Trophy in 2003-04. Then in 2004, she was named Associate Director of Athletics, serving in this position until her retirement in 2017. In this position, Weitbrecht was involved in multiple aspects of the daily operations involving 23 varsity athletic programs.
