Barnett was a three-time All-American at three different weight classes. In three straight appearances at nationals, he placed eighth at 150 lbs. in 1985, sixth at 158 lbs. in 1986 and fourth at 167 lbs. in 1987. As a senior, he established a school record for most matches wrestled in a season (47) and most victories in a season (40).

His 79 career wins was seventh best at time of graduation. Barnett was voted as the team's Most Outstanding Wrestler in 1986-87. He also was a two-time PAC champion.
