Jud Whelan was a varsity guard and a linebacker for the Blue Streaks. During his time at John Carroll he was named All-Big Four (1945-48), All-Ohio (1946-48), and Little All-American (1948).

In addition to his illustrious football and basketball career Whelan was also a varsity boxer from 1941 to 1942.
