Schaffner was a first team All-PAC pitcher for the John Carroll baseball team in 1980 and 1981. Twice, he was the runner-up for Player of the Year honors in the conference.
In his final two seasons, Schaffner was 8-1 against the league and led the PAC in strikeouts both years.
At the time he graduated, he was the school record holder for career wins and saves, as well as single season starts, complete games, wins, saves and innings pitched.
