Matt Payne was a member of the history-making 2002 football team. A consensus All-American in 2002, Payne racked up an impressive list of awards as a senior. He was first team All-North region, first team All-OAC and the Mike Gregory Award Winner as Top Offensive Lineman in OAC.
A three-year letterwinner and two-year starter, Payne was 19-5 in his two years as a starting tackle. He was a major factor in JCU's amazing 2002 campaign in which the Blue Streaks were 12-2, qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship, captured the East region champion and became the first NCAA Championship semifinalist team in school history.
Payne started the final 24 games of his career and was named the Most Valuable Lineman of the 2002 team.
