McDonnell held JCU's school record for longest punt: 87 yards against the Marines in 1926 as of his induction. Punting the year before against the Marines was an anchor in keeping a 0-0 tie. Helped attribute a large win over Adrian College 18-0 as well as another win over Quantico Marines 14-7.

Served as Captain of both the Football and Basketball teams.

After graduating, he led both basketball and football teams as an assistant coach.
