Ghirla was a two-year starter at quarterback and defensive back who led several school records at the time of his graduation.  During his career, he set school records for career interceptions with 11 (still 4th all-time), touchdown passes in a season (10 in 1953) and for punting average in a season (37.5 avg. in 1953).  His 1,606 career passing yards ranked third all-time when his playing career ended in 1954. 

His junior year, the Blue Streaks were 7-2, posting wins over Xavier, Toledo and Bradley.  Against Xavier, he had JCU's first official 300-yard passing game (308 yards).
