Holowenko lettered four times as a varsity tackle on the John Carroll football team from 1947 to 1950. As a freshman, he was named an All-Big Four in 1947.

In both 1948 and 1950, he was named to the AP All-Ohio second team. He played on teams that won the Great Lakes Bowl in 1948 and defeated Syracuse in 1950.
