Aggression Pays Off As Streaks Roll To Win Over Case Reserve In Wrestling Season Opener

JCU sophomore Vinny Jiovenetta was in control throughout his shutout win at 184 pounds
John Carroll used an aggressive game plan in every match, and it paid off handsomely as the Blue Streaks rolled to a 42-3 win over Case Western Reserve University Tuesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

In the 37th meeting between the two schools since Case Tech and Western Reserve merged, and the first with former  John Carroll All-American Mark Hawald at the helm of the Case Reserve program,  it was the host Spartans who got the first win of the night. Josh Hall broke a 3-3 tie late with a takedown midway through the final period then used an advantage in riding time to earn a 6-3 win over Blue Streak freshman Michael Buckiso

It did not take long to swing momentum the other way. Jeff Holy got out to an early lead on his way to a 10-7 triumph at 133, after which Jordan Victor won by forfeit at 141.

John Carroll's next two wrestlers turned in offensive clinics. 149-pounder Dan Mirman picked up a major decision, recording his first takedown in the opening three seconds and never looking back in posting an 18-7 victory.  Returning national qualifier Terner Gott then recorded a technical fall in the waning seconds of the second period of the 157-pound bout, rolling by a 20-3 count.

After Vinnie Pizzuli held off Brian Snyder, 7-6, at 165 pounds, the final three Blue Streaks dominated in their match-ups.  Dan McNamara pinned Ryan Brubaker in 3:49 at1 74 pounds,  Vinny Jiovenetta had over five minutes of riding time in a 5-0 decision over Joe DeGenova at 184, and Bryan Adamsmade quick work of his opponent at 197, getting the fall at 1:22
