Heavily favored John Carroll was trying to complete its first undefeated season since 1963, while underdog Baldwin-Wallace was trying to keep alive its streak of undefeated seasons, which at the time stood at 22. Already crowned Ohio Athletic Conference champions for 1989, JCU was looking for icing on the cake, but the Yellow Jackets ruined the party. Baldwin-Wallace pulled off the upset when Scott Shafer connected with Jerry Wrobel on a 55-yard touchdown pass late in the game. B-W then halted a late Blue Streak drive to seal a 25-19 victory.
