John Carroll tried but could not pull away from Baldwin-Wallace on this day, as the visitors rallied in the second half, tying the game at 14-14 and at 17-17. Eventually, the game would be decided in overtime, marking the first overtime game in the history of the series. B-W got the ball first, but lost yardage on its drive and turned the ball over on downs. JCU used four plays to reach the Jackets' ten-yard line, and David Vitatoe became the hero with his game-winning 27-yard field goal that sent the Blue Streaks into the 1997 NCAA playoffs.
