A match-up between two first place teams ended in the second overtime period, as John Carroll's Scott McKinney converted a midfield turnover into the game-winning goal to send the Blue Streaks to a 1-0 victory over Otterbein Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.
It was a contentious but well-played affair between the Blue Streaks and Cardinals, who combined for nine cards and three in game ejections (one red card was given after the game winning goal). The teams combined for 37 shots in the 102-plus minutes of play.
The issue was not settled until just over two minutes in to the second overtime. After JCU's Steve Rock used a great slide tackle at midfield to create a turnover, the Blue Streaks went on the attack. Kyle Buxman found Alex Bernot down the middle, whot hen fed McKinney with a great thru ball. McKinney beat Otterbein keeper David Timko with a low shot to the right cornner for his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Both goalkeepers -- Timko of Otterbein and Matt DeMarchi of John Carroll -- were sensational alla fternoon and made a number of saves to keep the match scoreless for all of regulation and one overtime period. Timko had four saves while Demarchi made seven.
With the win, John Carroll moves to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the OAC, and will retain at least a share of first place in the conference standings with four matches left to play in the regular season. Otterbein falls to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in league play.
