It doesn't happen very often in sports where a team can seek immediate revenge for a costly loss, but John Carroll will not have to wait long to get another crack at Marietta following a 2-1 overtime loss to the Pioneers Saturday in Marietta, Ohio.
Less than 48 hours after the Pioneers ended John Carroll's regular season on a sour note, the Blue Streaks will get to host Marietta in the OAC Tournament quarterfinal round. John Carroll, as the #3 seed, will get to host the #6 seed Pioneers at Don Shula Stadium (time to be determined)
Monday's winner will advance to play at #2 seed Heidelberg on Wednesday.
In the other quarterfinal round match on Monday, #5 seed Baldwin-Wallace will visit #4 seed Ohio Northern with the winner to face top-seed and regular season champion Capital Wednesday in Bexley.
As for Saturday's game, John Carroll opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Scott McKinney put in a shot off an Alex Bernot thru ball.
The host Pioneers would answer in the 26th minute, as Kyle Muth scored his sixth goal of the season.
The teams would combined for 42 shots, but the 42nd shot was the decider. In the 103rd minute, Dele' Adedago bent a shot around keeper Matt DeMarchi for the game winning goal.
DeMarchi had made six saves in the previous 102 minutes.
The loss leaves John Carroll's record at 9-8 overall and 6-3 in the OAC. With 18 points, John Carroll finished tied for second with Heidelberg in the final regular season standings. Capital won the regular season crown with an 7-1-1 record and 22 points.
Heidelberg was awarded the #2 seed in the OAC Tournament by virtue of a 3-1 win over JCU in the regular season (Oct. 16)
