John Carroll had more chances but Capital proved more opportunistic as the visiting Crusaders outlasted the host Blue Streaks for a 2-1 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer match staged at Don Shula Stadium.
At times in the match, John Carroll controlled play in the Capital side of the field, yet only had nine shots and one goal to show for its efforts.
Meanwhile, Capital was able to seize upon its chances. The first goal of the match was started when Natasha Ballard sent a free kick into the JCU box in the 24th minute. The Blue Streaks couldn't clear the ball, and when an attempt to send it of the zone was shanked straight up in the air, Paige Prescott had it land at her feet and she drilled a shot through the crowd and into the left side.
JCU continued to apply the pressure in an attempt to net an equalizer, but Capital's answer was a backbreaker goal in the 68th minute. Katie Robinson outran a JCU defender to a ball played down the left wing. She saved the ball before it reached the end line, and had enough time to float a great cross to Ballard, who was unmarked near the right post. She headed the ball in for a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Streaks averted the shutout with two seconds left when Elizabeth Daigler scored off a breakaway started by Natty Naso and beats the Capital keeper to the left post.
Capital improved to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the OAC, while JCU fell to 5-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
