Heidi Benson had a hand in four victories for John Carroll during the Veale Classic

from staff reports

Results: vs. Wooster (Friday)  /  vs. Oberlin (Saturday)

The John Carroll women's swimming and diving teams had to deal with a team that probably could be nationally ranked and a team that is currently nationally ranked in a pair of dual meets this weekend at the Veale Classic hosted by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

The team that could be nationally ranked -- especially after going on to win the Veale Classic -- downed John Carroll Friday night as Wooster rolled to a 153-86 victory. The team that is nationally ranked, #23 Oberlin, posted a 145-93 win over JCU on Saturday.

Despite the losses, Blue Streak freshman Heidi Benson had a hand in four of the six event victories that John Carroll accrued in the two days of competition, including all four that involved swimming.

Benson won the 1000 Free and the 500 Free against Wooster Friday. Her time of 10:56.35 in the 1000 Free was good enough to beat the field by over 48 seconds, and her 500 Free time of 5:23.22 was 13 seconds better than the rest of the competition.

On Saturday, Benson recorded a victory in the 1650 Free with a time of 18:22.19, touching the wall a full 22 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Benson also teamed with Katie Mathews, Lindsay Pickut and Kaitlin Griffin to win the 400 Free Relay (3:58.37).

JCU's other two wins occured in diving. On Friday, Deanna Graber won the 1-meter diving competition with 184.75 points. On Saturday, Lauren Singley captured a win in 3-meter diving with 205.40 points.

All diving competition in the Veale Classic was conducted at the William H. Johnson Natatorium on the John Carroll campus.
