Adams Victory At 184 Staves Off Cleveland State Shutout Bid In Annual Wrestling Grudge Match

Ben Adams was dominant during his 184-pound bout against Cleveland State

from staff reports

To paraphrase a popular song played often during the week leading up to the Ohio State-Michigan football game, apparently Ohio does not care much for the whole state of Michigan.

John Carroll wrestling head coach Kerry Volkmann is not one of those who subscribes to that point of view, as JCU junior Ben Adams -- who hails from Livonia, Michigan -- posted an 8-2 victory in his 184-pound bout to stave off a shutout bid by Cleveland State Tuesday evening at Woodling Gym.

The Division I Vikings would defeat the Blue Streaks by a final score of 34-3, but the Blue Streaks took a few positives from the match.

Senior 141-pounder Dominic Spitalieri nearly overcame a 4-0 deficit in his match, simply running out of time as he dropped a close 4-3 decision. Sophomore Devon Jurczak found himself down early by a 5-0 score, yet managed a takedown and wiped out all nearly all riding time in a 5-2 loss at 174 pounds.

Adams was clearly the star of the night for the Blue Streaks. Aggressive early, Adams would use early takedowns in both the first and second period to build a 5-0 lead, then copasted to an 8-2 triumph over Ben Balogh. Adams is now 2-0 on the season.

Freshman Jim Nemunaitis pushed the issue throughout most of his 197-pound bout, yet wound up on the short end of a 5-2 score.

The loss dropped John Carroll's dual meet record to 1-1 on the year.
