John Carroll ran out to a 37-13 halftime lead then coasted to a 72-45 victory over Carnegie-Mellon in the championship game of the Wittenberg University Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic held Saturday evening in Springfield, Ohio.
Sophomore Caitlin Sureck was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while freshman Lianna Jennings and sophomore Whitney Hamilton earned all-tournament honors.
The teams traded baskets in the first minute, but after a 2-2 tie, the Blue Streaks would run out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back. JCU limited Carnegie-Mellon to 6-30 (.200) shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes while building a 24-point halftime margin.
John Carroll (4-5), which defeated its second opponent with a winning record in as many nights, was paced by 14 points from Jennings and 10 from Sureck.
Carnegie-Mellon (6-4) had just one player, Leah Feola, in double figures with 11 points
This is the second time the Blue Streaks have captured the Wittenberg title in as many appearances at the tournament, the other occurring in 1996.
