Volleyball Stumbles At Carnegie-Mellon Crossover

from staff reports

box scores: vs. Geneva  /  vs. Eastern  /  vs. Carnegie-Mellon  /  vs. Muskingum

It appears that the John Carroll volleyball team was unable to carry momentum gained from a sweep of Lake Erie Tuesday with them to Pittsburgh for the Carnegie-Mellon Crossover Tournament this weekend.

John Carroll began the tournament hoping to end the weekend with more wins this season then it had in all of 2006. With an 8-6 record and facing two teams with losing records on the first day of the Carnegie-Mellon Tournament, the Blue Streaks seemed poised to make that happen.

Instead, JCU will leave Pittsburgh with an 8-10 record after losing all four matches.

The Blue Streaks dropped a pair of matches Friday, one in five games to Geneva and another in four games to Eastern. Adding insult to injury was losing to a Geneva squad that was 0-11 at the start of the match and had already lost once to JCU this season in three games at the Mount Union Invitational.

Geneva had other ideas, shaking off a JCU win in game one to post a 24-30, 30-20, 30-28, 25-30, 15-8 win. The Blue Streaks hoped to get a split for the day by getting past Eastern, which was 4-7 entering the match. The scores were close, but Eaglers prevailed, 29-31, 31-29, 31-29, 32-30.

On Saturday, John Carroll fought hard against the host Tartans, but lost in five to Carnegie-Mellon (36-34, 30-19, 27-30, 17-30, 15-12).

The weekend ended with a sweep at the hands of Ohio Athletic Conference foe Muskingum (30-23, 30-27, 31-29).
