John Carroll broke open a close match with four second half goals as the Blue Streaks remained undefeated at home in 2007 with a 5-1 victory over Hiram in a non-conference contest played at Don Shula Stadium.
The only point recorded by either team in the first half was tallied by JCU sophomore Elizabeth Daigler in the seventh minute. Brynn McNicholas provided the assist as the Blue Streaks outshot the Terriers, 13-2, in the opening 45 minutes.
JCU started to cash in on its opportunities in the second 45 minutes. Sophomore Caitlyn Walton would score the next two goals, the first on a rocket shot from 30 yards out after receiving a pass from senior Cara Pizzurro, and the second when she threaded a low shot after getting a nice lead pass from freshman Betsy Haigh. Walton's goals came in the 54th and 70th minutes.
Haigh would push the lead to 5-0 when Haigh ran down a pass by fellow rookie Aleks Quenneville and scored her second goal of the year on a breakaway.
Hiram broke through with its first goal when Claire Conner would fire a shot that deflected off JCU keeper Michelle Zrebiec in the 77th minute. Conner stayed with the play and would score her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The final goal was tallied by John Carroll senior Natty Naso, who punched in a well-placed corner kick by Walton at the 77:58 mark.
The five goals were the most in a single game by the Blue Streaks since a 5-1 win at Ursuline on September 29, 2005. Combined with a four-goal outburst against Lake Erie on Thursday, JCU has nine goals in its last two games -- the best two-match stretch since scoring ten goals in games against Daemen and Denison on Sept. 19 and Sept. 24, 2003.
