Senior Alex Bernot scored the first goal and assisted on the second to propel John Carroll to a 2-0 victory over host Ohio Northern in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at the ONU Soccer Field.
In defeating the defending OAC champions, John Carroll became the firstteam to shutout the Polar Bears this season and snapped Ohio Nothern's six-match winning streak in doing so.
Bernot opened the scoring midway through the second half, as he took a cross from Jeff Kosek and headed it past ONU keeper David Esser to give the Blue Streaks a 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, JCU scored again when Louis Kastelic scored off a Bernot deflection.
The Polar Bears held a 17-13 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge on corner kicks
JCU keeper Matt DeMarchi had four saves and recorded the shutout win.
The victory moves John Carroll's record to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, while Ohio Northern falls to 8-4 and 0-1 in league play.
