Lee Jennings (partially obscured in the center) floats the jumper that would win the game for the Blue Streaks as anxious teammates and coaches look on
Box Score
Freshman Lee Jennings floated in a six-foot jumper with 1.7 seconds remaining in the contest for what proved to be the winning points in a 69-67 John Carroll victory over Wilmington College Saturday afternoon at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
It was yet another big win for John Carroll, as the Blue Streaks have now won eight of their last nine games.
This win, however, may have been the most impressive of the bunch because of how it was achieved and who it was achieved against. John Carroll had to score nine of the final eleven points of the game against the defending Ohio Athletic Conference champions
Wilmington had just established its biggest lead of the game at 65-60 with 3:36 left in the second half. A lay-up by Kortney Kin had capped a 13-2 Quakers run that would erase a six-point John Carroll lead in a span of less than two full minutes.
A steal by Caitlin Sureck with just under three minutes to play ignited the rally. Jennings would finish off the break by hitting a jumper in the lane. Less than 30 seconds later, Jennings would get another steal. This time, Sureck would find a wide open Rachael Price on the perimeter. Price buried the three with 2:03 to play, tying the score at 65-65.
Both teams missed a pair of shots in subsequent possessions, but the second Blue Streak miss wound up in the hands of Sureck, who put a shot back in with 29 seconds to play.
The Quakers finally ended the run when kin scored on a lay-up with 15 seconds left to tie the score at 67-67, setting up Jennings' last second heroics.
Wilmington started the game strong, with sophomore Marianne McGoron scoring the first basket of the game. However, JCU would pick up momentum. With 10:46 remaining in the first half, junior Alex D'Amico hit a three point shot to put JCU up by 12, the biggest lead either team would hold all afternoon.
The end of the first half ended much like the end of the second half. JCU junior Rachael Price would pass off to Jennings with three seconds left, and Jennings made the lay-up at the buzzer to put JCU up 36-27 going into halftime.
Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the Quakers were not about the go quietly. A series of turnovers by JCU would allow Wilmington to get back into the game. After sophomore Kortney Kin pulled the Quakers within one, senior Jackie Hauke would capitalize on a steal and score a lay-up with 14:23 remaining to put the Wilmington up, 43-42.
It would be a see-saw battle over the next several minutes, but with just under eight minutes showing on the second half clock, the Blue Streaks appeared to seize momentum. A Whitney Hamilton lay-up followed by 5-5 free throw shooting by Price over a 76-second interval had John Carroll ahead, 58-52, with 6:01 remaining in regulation.
John Carroll (10-6, 5-4 OAC) was led by 18 points from Jennings and 16 from Price. Hamilton also chipped in 12.
Junior Erin Zahariev led the team in rebounds with ten.
Wilmington (12-4, 6-3) got a monster effort from Kin, who was the only player to have a double-double in the contest. In addition to scoring a game-high 27 points, Kin also pulled down 12 rebounds. Of Kin's 27 points, 20 were tallied during the second half. Katie Streck was the only other Quaker to score in double figures, finishing with 12.
The Quakers may have been done in by a 1-15 effort from beyond the arc. Inside the three-point stripe, Wilmington was 26-49 (.531).
