Caitlin Sureck (#32) and the Blue Streaks had a tough night on the boards against the Muskies
Box Score
John Carroll found the euphoria of its big win over Otterbein last Saturday to be short lived, as Muskingum brought the Blue Streaks back to earth with a resounding 87-62 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday evening in New Concord, Ohio.
The loss snapped John Carroll's four-game winning streak in which it had averaged 89.5 points per contest.
It was a close game over the first 13 minutes. Muskingum had jumped out to a 21-14 lead halfway through the period, but the Blue Streaks responded. When Laura Gruber buried a jumper at the 7:32 mark, Muskingum led by just a single point at 24-23.
From that moment on, it would be all Muskies. The home team closed the half on a 14-2 run, while limiting John Carroll to a 1-12 shooting effort over the final seven minutes and forcing three turnovers. When the dust settled, Muskingum owned a 38-25 lead at the break.
The Blue Streaks tried to keep pace, but it would be to no avail. Sadie Zander made a lay-up with 16;33 showing on the second half clock to make the score 45-33, but the Muskies scored 18 of the next 24 points to put the game out of reach.
Muskingum (5-1, 1-1 OAC) got a dominant effort from senior post Jessica McKenzie, who in scoring her 1000th career point, tallied 25 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. Tiffany Youel added 20 points and 12 assists, and Jessica Lenhart added 17 points and ten boards. The Muskies outrebounded John Carroll by a 52-29 margin.
John Carroll (4-3, 1-1 OAC) was led by 22 points from Lee Jennings, while Whitney Hamilton added ten points as the only other Blue Streak in double figures.
