John Carroll's attempt to sweep crosstown rival Baldwin-Wallace for the first time in 15 years was swept away by a cold shooting night for the Blue Streaks in what became a 60-47 loss at the DeCarlo Varsity Center Wednesday night.
Baldwin-Wallace, which came into the game on an eight-game winning streak and ranked #13 in the nation, clinched an outright Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championship with the win. It was all due to a superb all-around second half for which John Carroll had no answer.
Early on, Whitney Hamilton broke a 2-2 tie with the first three pointer of the game. Rachael Price followed on the ensuing possession with yet another trifecta to widen the score to 8-2. It would be the Streaks' largest lead of the game and the only three pointers made all night for John Carroll.
Shortly after ten of the next 12 points to take a 12-10 lead. From that point on in the opening period, the two teams would trade the lead several times with no squad gaining a decisive advantage. A lay-up by Lee Jennings with 1:51 would be the final points of the first half, and John Carroll retained a slight 27-26 lead entering the intermission
Fortunes changed in the second half as Baldwin-Wallace junior point guard Rachael Quiring, who was held to no points in the first half, slipped in a runner to give the Yellow Jackets a 28-27 advantage. The visitors never trailed again.
Quiring's basket jump started a 14-2 run to open the second half, capped by a Selena Budge drive to the hole with 16:26 remaining that gave Baldwin-Wallace a 38-29 lead.
The Yellow Jackets would never be threatened for the remainder of the contest, keeping a double-digit margin for the final 14:21.,
John Carroll, which had defeated Baldwin-Wallace 80-73 in Berea on January 16 (which still stands as the Yellow Jackets' most recent loss), saw its chances for a season sweep done in by a dismal second half of shooting. The Blue Streaks would go 0-7 from beyond the arc and 5-27 from the field in the final 20 minutes
Baldwin-Wallace (22-2, 15-2 OAC) had just one player in double figures as Budge scored a game-high 16 points. A bigger story was the Yellow Jackets' significant 54-36 edge on the boards, as Carly Flowers pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
John Carroll (15-9, 10-7 OAC), which dropped its third game in a row at home, was paced by 14 points from Jennings, who was the only Blue Streaks to reached double digits in the scoring column.
