John Carroll found out the hard way that a basketball game must be played the full 40 minutes under any circumstances.
Using a massive late run to turn a tight game into a blow out, the Wilmington Quakers put an emphatic end to John Carroll's seven-game road winning streak with a 94-69 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Streaks trailed by just four points at the half and were still down by only six points at 67-61 with eight minutes to play when things went horribly wrong for John Carroll.
After a Lana Kiko jumper and a Lee Jennings free throw had cut a nine-point Wilmington lead down to six points with eight minutes to play, the Quakers attempted to pull away from the Streaks. Gina Hyle and Katie Streck combined to score all of Wilmington's points during a 12-4 run that put the home team ahead, 79-65.
That run would be just the start of things for the Quakers.
Jennings briefly cut into the lead ona made jumper that put the score at 79-64 with 4:01 showing on the second half clock. JCU called a time out in the hopes of setting up a late-game surge.
Instead, it would be all Wilmington, as the Quakers scored 15 of the final 17 points of the game to hand John Carroll its first road defeat since December 15, 2007.
The first half of the game was a much different story. Caitlin Sureck opened the contest with a three-point field goal to help the Blue Streaks run out to a 7-2 lead. The Quakers answered with six straight points, and the roller coaster ride would begin. In the first half alone, there would be 11 lead changes, with the Quakers taking a 42-38 lead into the locker room.
Wilmington would lead for the entire second half.
Hyle scored 24 of her game-high 36 points in the second half for Wilmington (19-6, 13-5 OAC), which was 17-31 (.548) from the field, 4-7 (.571) from three-point range and 14-16 (.875)n in the final 20 minutes of Saturday's game. Marianne McGoron (17), Streck (13) and Kortney Kin (12) also reached double figures for the Quakers.
John Carroll (15-10, 10-8 OAC) was led by 18 points from Jennings. Rachael Price and Alex D'Amico joined her in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
