Ryan Lewis had a lead-off home run and both Sean McCarthy and Matthew Pangallo had a pair of runs batted in to help pace John Carroll to an 8-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader, thus earning a split with the host Washington & Jefferson College Preisdents Tuesday afternoon in Washington, Pennsylvania.
With southwestern Pennsylvania spared the brunt of this past weekend's winter storms that pounded Ohio, the Blue Streaks and Presidents were able to play a pair of game at Ross Memorial Park on a chilly March afternoon. Both teams seemed to have the bats in deep freeze as well early on, as the first game of the scheduled twinbill featured just nine hits.
JCU struck first in the opener, as a pair of hit batsmen jump started a big third inning. Mike Carbo brought home the first two runs on an RBI triple, while Pangallo plated the fourth run on a two-out RBI triple of his own. The Blue Streaks scored four runs with just those two hits.
The Presidents responded with two runs in the fourth inning. After retirning the first 11 batters he faced, JCU starter Brandon Kurtz would give up a two-out single, which was followed by a two-out two-run home run by designated hitter Ryan Gregg.
The game's only error would lead to a three-run fifth inning for Washington & Jefferson. Despite just two hits, the Presidents were able to chase Kurtz from the game, and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Dan Vietmeyer.
JCU had one last chance to tie in the seventh inning when Bryan Robinett reached on a two-out single. Pinch runner Michael Krainz stole second base, but Adam Sockel flied out to deep right field for the final out.
Carbo had three of John Carroll's five hits, which was one more than the four Washington & Jefferson produced.
In the second game, the Blue Streaks would pound out 11 hits, starting with a home run by Lewis that led off the game. JCU would tack on two more in the first when Pangallo doubled home Krainz and Sockel to stake the Blue Streaks a 3-0 lead.
The Presidents answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, but John Carroll got them right back on a one-out RBI single by McCarthy that scored both Adam Milanovich and John Hastings.
Frank Quirin would hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning off JCU starter Paul O'Donnell to make the score 5-3, but that would be as close Washington & Jefferson would get. O'Donnell would work 4.1 innings and allow four runs (all earned) on six hits in improving to 3-0 on the season.
JCU would tack on single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to put the game away -- the last two on RBI hits by Krainz and Christopher Cairo.
In the meantime, freshman Tony Evanko would work the final 2.2 innings to record his first collegiate save. he struck out three and walke djust one with yielding a single hit.
McCarthy had three hits in the game, while Lewis (who scored two runs) and Pangallo each had two hits.
The victory gives John Carroll an 8-3 record through its first 11 games.
