John Carroll won four of the seven matches actually contested, but defaults at #3 doubles and #6 singles would prove to be the difference as host Wittenberg University edged the Blue Streaks, 5-4, Saturday at the Dayton Center Courts in Dayton, Ohio.

In the season opener for the Blue Streaks, John Carroll jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play. The #1 tandem of James Steward and Ross Venzke won by an 8-3 score over Brad Seymour and Robert Fisher. The #2 pairing of Matt Tomayko and Michael Finissi also fared well with an 8-5 victory.

JCU would have to win three singles matches to pull out a team victory, but came up just short. Steward (6-4, 6-1) and Tomayko (6-0, 6-3) rolled to impressive straight set wins at #1 and #2 singles, but Wittenberg won the #3 and #5 match-ups in straight sets as well.

The match essentially came down to #4 singles, where Craig Lods rallied from a set down to defeat Venzke by a score of 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
