In splitting the four matches decided in the latter stages, a gallant upset bid by visiting John Carroll fell short against host Wittenberg in a 6-3 loss Saturday at the Dayton Center Court in Dayton, Ohio.
Five of the nine matches were very one-sided, and of those five, only one was a John Carroll victory. That belonged to senior Sara Crane, who won her #1 singles match in straight sets over Allison Earhart (6-4, 6-3).
Crane was also involved in one of the four close bouts. In the #1 doubles match featuring Crane and fellow senior partner Allison Balestrino, the Blue Streak duo outlasted Sean Delaney and Jayne Miely, 8-6.
The other close JCU win was turned in by freshman Ashley Bauer, who came from behind to defeat Emily Nash, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
The Blue Streaks came very close to snagging the upset. In #6 singles, Julie Britten went toe-to-toe with Wittenberg doubles specialist Delaney but fell by a narrow 7-5, 7-5 score. In doubles play, Earhart and Elizabeth Micheletti got the better of John Carroll's #2 doubles tandem of Anna Navatsyk and Amy Marchlen, 9-8 (7-3).
Wittenberg improved to 5-2 with the win, while John Carroll slipped to 1-6.
