Box Scores: Game 1 vs. Kenyon / Game 2 vs. Kenyon
John Carroll's month of March had been nothing more than a cruel waiting game as weather kept the Blue Streaks off the diamond.
In their return to action Saturday afternoon -- 28 days after their last competitive game -- more cruelty awaited.
Against Kenyon in a non-conference doubleheader, JCU was unable to hold on to a four-run advantage in losing game one (6-5) and then was limited to just two hits in falling by a 2-1 score in game two.
In the opening game, JCU stormed out of the gate. Julie Marlowe led off with a double, and would later score on a Jamie Smrdel sacrifice fly. The Blue Streaks would score one more run in the first on a two-out RBI single by Laura Boselovic.
Kenyon would trim the lead to 2-1 with a run in the third inning, but John Carroll would strike for three runs in the top of the fourth. Boselovic and Samantha Thompson each had RBI hits in the inning.
Thompson was doing her job on the mound, and had kept Kenyon in check with just two runs allowed on six hits through the six innings. But the Ladies would get to Thompson in the seventh, scoring three times to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
The game would end in the bottom of the ninth when freshman Brianna LaChusa hit a game-winning two-out RBI single off reliever Ashley Lippert.
Despite the loss, Marlowe had an amazing game by going 5-5 at the plate with two runs.
There would be a different kind of drama in the second game, as Kenyon starting pitcher Stephanie Hemmingson held JCU to just two hits -- one by Denya Fanelli in the second inning and the other an RBI single by Beth Bachman in the fifth that plated Jenn Nairne (who reached on a walk) for the only John Carroll run.
Boselovic, who allowed just three hits in 4.1 innings, took the hard luck loss.
JCU is now 2-10 after the losses, while Kenyon improved to 6-8.
