Box Scores: Game 1 vs. Marietta  /  Game 2 vs. Marietta

On Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park in Marietta, Ohio, John Carroll took its offensive frustration out on a team it had never before scored double digits against and had only beaten five times in 46 previous meetings.

Following a 1-0 game shutout loss to Marietta College in which they were held to three runs or less for the fourth consecutive game, the Blue Streaks erupted for a 10-1 game two victory.

The ten runs were the most John Carroll had ever scored against the Pioneers, topping the previous high water mark of eight established twice before in 2002 and 2004.

Marietta starter T. J. Knowlton made sure the JCU bats stayed silent at least one more game in the opener. He limited JCU to lead-off singles in the third, fourth and fifth innings and did not allowed a Blue Streak base runner to advance past second base in a three-hit complete game shutout.

Paul O'Donnell was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one run and four hits in five innings of work. The lone run he allowed was a one-out RBI single by Dominick Winters in the fourth inning.

Game two was a much different story altogether. Ryan Lewis got the ball rlling with a double down the right field line. #Michael Krainz followed with an RBI single, and would later score after Sean McCarthy doubled and Bryan Robinett brought him home on a ground out.

The Blue Streaks were ahead 3-0 when they broke the contest wide open in the fourth. Adam Sockel and John Hastings reached on a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively. Christopher Cairo followed with a single to load the bases.

Mike Carbo would come through with a single that plated two runs. Lewis would drive in the third run on a single. A throwing error led to the final two runs, and when the dust settled, JCU led 8-0.

John Carroll would tack on single runs in the fifth inning (a Sockel solo home run) and the seventh inning (a Joe Bott RBI single) to complete the scoring.

Lewis and Cairo both had three hits in the game as JCU outhit the Pioneers, 13-7.

Tony Evanko improved to 4-0 with the victory, allowing just five hits and one run in six innings, striking out four and walking two. Marty Smith worked the final three innings for his second save.

The nine-run margin of victory was the largest by a JCU team in the history of the series which dates back to 1984.

The split doubleheader gives John Carroll an overall record of 13-6 and a league record of 4-2. Marietta, which suffered its first OAC loss, now has a mark of 8-13 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
