Opportunities Fall By Wayside As Blue Streak Wrestlers Drop Match To CSU Vikings

Jim Nemunaitis started John Carroll's night against Cleveland State with a major decision victory

Tonight's dual meet between John Carroll and Cleveland State was as much about the host Vikings seizing opportunities as it was the Blue Streaks missing out on them.

Hidden within a 31-13 loss to Cleveland State was the fact that John Carroll held a lead or was tied late in six of the ten matches. But of those six leads, only three materialized into John Carroll wins.

The match began at 197 pounds, and Jim Nemunaitis (Broadview Hts., OH, Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) sounded John Carroll's arrival with a major decision at 197, producing three near fallsin the third period to defeat Jeff Schuller, 14-3.

Alec Barker (North Ridgeville, OH, North Ridgeville) nearly gave JCU a 7-0 lead at  285, as he went toe-to-toe with Chris Weber. Barker would force overtime, but just 17 seconds in to the extra time, Barker tried a throw but wound up on his back and was pinned.

John Cobos (Avon Lake, OH, St. Edward) suffered a similar fate, as he was leading 4-3 in his 125-pound bout with Zachary Zupancic. Leading 4-3 early in the third period, the rookie lost his hold trying to force Zupancic's back toward the mat, and suffered an ignominy of a reversal and pin in a matter of seconds. What could have very easily been a third consecutive JCU became a second straight loss by fall, and the Blue Streaks trailed 12-4.

Kevin Nycz (Parma, OH, Holy Name) stemmed the tide in the 133-pound bout as he won handily over Zech Huff, 8-4. But close losses at 141 (Greg Ryan (Warren, OH, Howland) held a 4-2 lead, lost 8-5 to Mike Mencini), 149 (Mauricio Gonzalez (Strongsville, OH, Strongsville) led 2-0 but fell 9-4) and 157 (Corey Carlo broke away from a 2-2 tie to defeat Connor Suba (Middleburg Heights, St. Edwards)) gave the Vikings a cushion heading into the final three matches.

A pin and major decision gave Cleveland State a 31-6 lead before John Carroll's Ben Adams (Livonia, MI, Livonia Churchill) closed the match with a pin at the 4:34 mark of the second period.
