Back-To-Back Pitching Showcases Help Streaks Sweep Muskies On The Road

Brian Benander had an RBI single in the tenth inning to produce the only run of JCU's 1-0 win over Muskingum

John Carroll rode the strength of back-to-back stellar pitching performances to come home with a sweep of the Muskies in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mose Morehead Field  Field Wednesday in New Concord, Ohio.

JCU won game one in ten innings, 1-0, before taking the nightcap, 5-1. Three Blue Streak pitchers -- Paul O'Donnell, Tom Schaberl and Chris Koller -- combined to throw 17 innings in which they allowed just one run on 14 hits, striking out nine while walking one.

O'Donnell had an effort for the ages, as he pitched a complete-game ten-inning shutout in the opener. He would scatter six hits (all singles) over ten innings as he and Muskingum starter Nate Van Meter went to toe-to-toe for a majority of the contest.

The Blue Streaks finally would break the scoreless tie in the top of the tenth. John Hastings drew a one-out walk, and was moved to second on an infield single by Michael Krainz. After a second out was recorded, Briian benander produced the only RBI hit of the game as his single plated Hastings with what would be the winning run.

O'Donnell would come out to work the tenth inning, and gave up a two-out single before closing the door with a pop up. He improved to 4-1 with his second complete game win of the year.

Game two had less drama, as JCU scored twice in the first, and once in the third, fifth and seventh to cruise to a 5-1 win.

Schaberl gave up his lone run in the first, but then settled down to work scoreless second third and fourth innings. He encountered some trouble in the fifth inning, and gave way to Koller, who got a bases loaded strike out to end the threat, then worked a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to pick up his first save of 2009.

The  middle of the order was solid for the Streaks, as Tom Hickey went 3-4 with two RBI and Russell Toth was 3-4 with one RBI.

With the wins, John Carroll improved to 16-6 overall and 5-3 in the OAC, while Muskingum fell to 14-10 overall and 4-4 in league play
