Box Scores: Game 1 vs. Heidelberg / Game 2 vs. Heidelberg
John Caroll held a 3-1 lead midway through the opener, but would ultimately wind up losing both games of its regular season ending doubleheader Saturday on senior day at Schweickert Field.
The Blue Streaks fell 5-3 in game one, and 14-9 in game two.
Of course, the good news is that the losses will not prevent John Carroll from starting its second season on Thursday. The bad news is they will not be hosting the OAC Tournament, something they only could have done by sweeping the 'Berg.
JCU got off to a good start. After trailing early by a 1-0 count, John Carroll would get to Student Princes starter Dave Paddock in the fourth. John Skomra started off by singling up the middle. After Russell Toth reached on an error, Matt Pangallo singled to load the bases.
Chris Cairo came through in the next at bat, belting a two-run single to give JCU a 2-1 lead. With two out, Michael Krainz singled home Pangallo for a 3-1 advantage.
Paul O'Donnell did his best to hold the lead, but a three-run top of the sixth --aided by a dropped fly ball -- would put Heidelberg ahead for good at 5-3.
The after effects of the tough game one loss carried over to game two. The Student Princes would tear off nine runs in the first four innings to build a 9-0 lead.
It was still 10-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when JCU made things interesting. Pangallo led off the frame with a home run. Walks to John Hastings and Krainz set up both Bryan Robinett and Tom Hockey for RBI singles.
John Carroll did not stop there. Following a walk to Skomra that loaded the bags, Toth doubled to left center, scoring all three runners to reduce the Student Princes' lead to 10-7.
That would be as close as the Streaks would get.
In being swept for the first time all year, John Carroll is now 24-10 oerall and finishes the league schedule with a 11-7 ledger.
