One Bad Minute Proves Costly For Blue Streaks In Showdown With Heidelberg

JCU senior Brendan McCreary (#10) followed a ball into the Heidelberg box but to no avail Tuesday night at Shula Stadium
It was not so much a night John Carroll wanted to forget. It was more like a minute.

Two goals in the span of 36 seconds was all the offense Heidelberg would need, as the host Blue Streaks could not muster an equal response to a physical and strong Heidelberg defense in falling by a 2-1 count Tuesday night at Don Shula Stadium.

Box Score

With the loss, John Carroll falls to 4-2 in OAC play and 10-6 overall, while Heidelberg improved to 11-3-1 and 5-0-1 in the conference with the win.

The Student Princes were extremely aggressive from the get-go. There was certainly a sense of urgency among the number two and three teams in the conference, but Heidelberg got the better of the Blue Streaks tonight.

“They were more aggressive than we were,” said Blue Streaks Head Coach Hector Marinaro after the game. “We're playing at home and there's no reason for us to let teams manhandle us in our building.”

The Blue Streaks fell behind in the 21st minute when sophomore forward Grant Beck spun his way around an off-guard Blue Streak defense and buried one in the back of the net. While he dragged a defender to the ground in the process, the controversial goal stood and John Carroll trailed 1-0.

Less than a minute later, Beck found himself wide open about 35 yards away from the goal. His ensuing shot stunned Matt DeMarchi in net, as the trajectory of the ball drastically changed as it snuck over DeMarchi's head. That was all the scoring Heidelberg would need.

John Carroll held strong though. Refusing to give in, the Blue Streaks continued to push the ball down field. The home team was awarded 11 corner kicks by the end of the game (nine in the second half), but could not convert on any of them.

“We need to come up with a more threatening corner kick play,” said junior defender Joey Grace. “We need to put something together that gives us a better opportunity to score.”

In the 81st minute, the Blue Streaks finally saw results. Kevin McKamish was credited for a goal that was essentially a loose ball in front of the net with keeper Ryan Smith caught behind a defender. David Hickey was credited with the assist on McKamish's third goal of the year.

A frantic final nine minutes did not yield an equalizer as JCU slipped into a third-place tie with Capital.
