On senior night, John Gabrielle and his five classmates played a major role in a big win over Baldwin-Wallace
On senior night at Don Shula Stadium, the John Carroll University men's soccer team accomplished what they set out to do, rid themselves of an albatross, and did something quite impressive of which they probably were not aware.
First and foremost, the Blue Streaks won the match by a 1-0 count over crosstown rival Baldwin-Wallace.
Box Score
This win marked John Carroll's first victory over the Yellow Jackets since 2007. JCU had been 0-3-1 against the boys from Berea since 2008.
An added bonus was becoming the first team this year to shut out Baldwin Wallace. In fact, the Yellow Jackets had gone 25 matches with at least one goal dating back to a 2-0 shutout loss to Otterbein on October 9, 2010.
“The guys came out for senior night and left everything on the field," said head coach
Hector Marinaro. "Everyone pulled together, played as a team, and showed what they're capable of tonight.”
Perhaps most importantly though, the Blue Streaks were aware that their hopes of hosting an Ohio Athletic Conference semifinal playoff game was on the line. With a win, the Streaks would guarantee themselvesno worse than a #2 seed in next week's postseason tournament. The only thing that stood in their way was ninety minutes against their longtime rival.
With a steady wind blowing over Wasmer Field, the Blue Streaks kept the offensive pressure on early which lead to three shots on goal within the first 10 minutes.
John Carroll was rewarded 15 minutes into the first half when freshman
Mariusz Trzeciak scored off of a corner kick. Initially received by sophomore
Kevin McKamish, the ball found its way to Trzeciak amidst heavy traffic in front of the goal.
Lead by the efforts of senior defenders Jake Milli, Ben Vietmeier and Joey Grace, the JCU defense held strong in support of their senior goaltender Carl Contracier, who made four first half saves.
In a physical second half, the rivalry came alive as tempers were tested and shots were taken at will. Thankfully for the JCU faithful, Contracier was up to the task and finished with 12 saves, including a key save in the last two minutes when he dove to his right to stop a low liner from B-W's leading scorer Carlin Vandendriessche.
John Carroll moved to 11-6 overall and 7-1 in the OAC while Baldwin-Wallace slipped to
14-4 and 5-3 in the OAC
