Final Exam Jinx Continues As Men's Basketball Falls To Ohio Northern

Kyle Hubbard only missed one of six shots from the field against Ohio Northern
Box Score One year, just a fluke.  Two years, just a coincidence. Five years? Officially a jinx.

The Blue Streaks lost on the Saturday before final examinations for the fifth consecutive year as Ohio Northern served the bad news for the second December in a row by handing John Carroll an 82-71 loss.

Box Score

John Carroll led for nearly all of the first 27 minutes of the game, and held a 50-45 advantage with 14:05 left in the second half when the bottom fell out.

A 20-3 run by the Polar Bears -- fueled mainly by the outside shooting of Taylor Kuhlman and Jared Horstman -- essentially cemented the game. When Kyle Hubbard tipped-in a ball at the 6:11 mark, he ended a field goal drought of nearly eight minutes that featured 12 consecutive missed shots from the floor.

John Carroll led by as many as nine points in the opening half, but despite pushing the margin out that far on four occasions, could not pull away from the Polar Bears. A lay-up by Regan Sweeney off an assist by Ryan Angers just before the buzzer gave John Carroll a 39-35 lead at the break.

The Streaks continued to hold the lead, and still seemed in control when Corey Shontz made a lay-up at the 14:05 mark that made the score 50-45.

Ohio Northern (5-2, 2-1 OAC) was paced by a game-high 23 points from Taylor Kuhlman, who began the day with just 18 points scored through the first six games. Jared Horstman added 19, as the two unheralded players were a combined 13-18 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line.

John Carroll (5-2, 2-1 OAC), which had its five-game winning streak snapped, was paced by 14 from Shontz and 13 from Hubbard and Mark Hester.

After making eight of their first 14 shots, the Blue Streaks finished the game 23-66 (.348) from the field, including 8-29 (.276) from the three-point stripe.

John Carroll's last win on the Saturday before finals was an 80-72 victory over Capital on December 9, 2006.
