Johnny Hastings scored four runs to go along with the 13 he drove in during John Carroll's doubleheader at Muskingum
A combined 13 RBI in two games by senior shortstop Johnny Hastings, including a school-record tying eight in game one, helped the John Carroll baseball team earn a split of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday at Muskingum University.
After blasting the Muskies in game one by a 16-7 count, a ninth-inning rally fell one run short in game two as the Blue Streaks fell 12-11.
Box Scores:
Game One /
Game Two
The Blue Streaks opened up a 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but the host squad battled back and took a 6-5 lead in the fourth.
JCU would grab the lead back in the top of the fifth with a four-run surge keyed by RBI hits from
Tom Hickey and
Chris Larry. The issue was still very much in doubt, however, entering the seventh and final inning as John Carroll was clinging to a 9-7 advantage.
The drama would be erased by a seven-run explosion in the top half of the inning.
Ryan Konsler led off with a solo home run, and after an out, a walk, a hit by pitch, and an RBI double by
Brian Benander, the Muskies elected to intentionally walk Hickey to get to Hastings.
The plan backfired ... badly.
Hastings would hit his first career grand slam to give John Carroll a 15-9 lead.
Larry followed two at bats later with a solo home run to compl;ete the scoring.
Patrick O'Brien pitched 3.1 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory, allowing just one unearned run on three hits.
Game two featured a similar start as the Streaks built a 5-1 lead. Thhe Muskies would then score nine unasnwered runs, and would take a 12-6 lead into the top of the ninth inning.
Dan Potter started things off with a walk, and was followed by a Benander double and a Hickey walk.
A wild pitch scored Potter and the other two Blue Streaks advanced a base, setting up a man who already had 11 runs batted in at that point of the afternoon.
Once again, Hastings was put into an RBI situation, and he would come through with a two run single to score pinch runner
Connor Marrero and Benander.
Two batters later, after a
Zachary Moss single, Larry drove in his fourth run of the day with his fourth hit of the day to make the score 12-10, and still no outs had been recorded.
That would be short lived as the next two Blue Streaks were retired. The ninth man to bat, Joe Veltri singled to center field, then advanced to second on a fielding error . In the meantime, Larry advanced to third and Moss scored, making the score 12-11.
Muskingum, however, got Potter to fly out to end the rally and the game.
The split leaves John Carroll with a record of 10-14 overall and 4-4 (T-3rd) in the OAC. Muskingum's record is now 9-16 overall and 2-6 in league play.
