After going 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, neither team could determine much about what it accomplished after battling to a 1-1 draw.
Through eight matches, the Blue Streaks have still only suffered one loss this season in the Ohio Athletic Conference, that coming at the hands of the nationally ranked Ohio Northern Polar Bears. But the tie with Heidelberg today left the Blue Streaks still in need of a road win at Wilmington Saturday evening to earn the #2 seed.
Depending on perspective, the best or worst thing that happened to John Carroll was scoring an early goal. Within the first three minutes of the game, junior forward
Mariusz Trzeciak earned his fourth goal of the season from ten yards out as sophomore midfielder
Brian Potocnik came through with the assist with his seventh of the season.
“It felt relieving for the most part… it's good to go right off the bat and get a goal” quoted Trzeciak, “However, I think we took it the wrong way because a lot of people got lazy after it.”
John Carroll hammered 11 shots to Heidelberg's two in the first half, yet still led 1-0. Among the misses was a penalty kick that struck the right post in the closing minutes of the period.
As it turned out, the missed penalty kick came back to haunt the Blue Streaks.
The second half remained scoreless due to the some spectacular saves of the goalkeepers, junior
Geoff Bloom of John Carroll and Heidelberg's Matthew Stevens.
A John Carroll defense that had been stout all day suffered a costly lapse in the final four minutes. Freshman Chris Koczak, who had misfired a few minutes earlier, ripped a shot to the right post that ricocheted in.
What seemed like a dominating effort at times by the Blue Streaks was suddenly a 1-1 tie.
In the final seconds of regulation, John Carroll had one last look on a Potocnik corner kick, but with Stevens prone on the ground and out of position, JCU was unable to effectively put a shot on goal.
Neither team had a near miss in the two overtime periods, as only four shots were taken total.
John Carroll ends the day with a record of 4-1-3 in league play and 8-6-3 overall, while Heidelberg moves to a overall mark of 9-6-2 and 4-2-2 in conference.
The Blue Streaks will travel to Wilmington College on Saturday. The Quakers are currently seeded second in the conference while Ohio Northern locked first place with a perfect 8-0 record.
“This [game against Wilmington] is a must-win for us … we want to end the season right. This is a game we should have won, but honestly, we are setting our goals beyond today.”
