Box Score

Unfazed by an early deficit, a young John Carroll men's basketball team grabbed the lead and control of the game in the second half on its way to an 83-77 road win against Heidelberg University to open its 2012-13 conference schedule.

Ten players saw at least 13 minutes of action for the Blue Streaks (3-2 overall, 1-0 OAC), who trailed 38-36 at the half before methodically taking charge.

A 12-2 run by the host Student Princes turned a 19-14 JCU lead into a 26-21 'Berg advantage with under seven minutes remaining before intermission.  The hosts led by as many as nine points and did not relinquish the scoring advantage until Kyle Hubbard's jumper put the Blue & Gold on top, 42-40, soon into the second period.

Later in the half, freshman Danny Wallack engaged in his own 6-0 run with a 3-pointer and three straight foul shots to give JCU a lead it would not surrender.

Though they shot just 43.6% (24-55) from the field for the game, the Blue Streaks cashed in on 30-38 free throws to seal the victory.  Ryan Angers (11-12) and Hubbard (9-9) did their part to ice the game from the line.  Heidelberg made just 17 of 35 foul shot opportunities (48.6%).

Hubbard's 23 points on just 11 shots from the field paced the visitors, while Wallack (16), David Hendrickson (15), and Angers (11) all chipped in double figures for JCU.  The 'Berg was led by 17 tallies from Nate Davis.

With the win, the Blue Streaks begin their quest to defend last season's OAC regular season title, and will welcome Mount Union to the DeCarlo Varsity Center on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m.
