Box Score Historically, the John Carroll University men's basketball team protects its home court just about as well as anyone, posting a home record of 44-8 over the course of the past four seasons. On Wednesday night, however, the Blue Streaks were not able to stick to their winning ways at the DeCarlo Varsity Center, losing to the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders by a score of 92-76.
The Blue Streaks came out of the gates firing as an early basket by senior
Kyle Hubbard was followed by a 3-pointer from sophomore
David Hendrickson to give JCU the early 5-0 lead. Minutes later, JCU built upon its lead to take a 12-5 advantage through the first five minutes of action, forcing a timeout by Mount Union.
Shortly after, sophomore
Jake Hollinger was fouled while making a difficult lay-up and completed the and-one opportunity, giving the Blue Streaks the 23-12 lead with 11:01 remaining in the first half. From there, the Purple Raiders turned things up a notch as they narrowed the deficit to four, 31-27, before senior
Kenny Janz came through with an emphatic block, keeping the Blue Streaks' lead intact for the time being.
With only seconds remaining in the first half, the Blue & Gold found themselves trailing by one, 38-37, before Hendrickson nailed a 3-pointer to give JCU the lead at halftime, 40-38.
Just as the Streaks came out guns blazing in the first half, the Purple Raiders returned the favor in the second, building themselves a seven point lead (57-50) with less than 13 minutes to play. Hollinger again stepped up with a huge rejection on a Mount Union 3-point attempt, which then led to a transition 3-pointer from freshman
Danny Wallack to cut the deficit to four and shift momentum in favor of the home team.
However, the Raiders responded with a swing of their own as they went on a 9-1 run, ballooning their lead to 66-54 with 10:33 remaining. Senior
Kyle Hubbard, the Blue Streaks' leading scorer, then nailed his first 3-pointer of the game to cut the deficit to nine, 66-57.
The Blue Streaks couldn't slow down the Mount Union attack, struggling to control the tempo of the game and cut the deficit any further. Hubbard nailed another 3-pointer with 4:14 left to cut JCU's deficit to eight, 80-72, but that's as close as the Streaks would come.
Mount Union controlled the game from there on out, winning the game by a final score of 92-76.
With the loss, the Blue Streaks fall to 3-3 on the season, including an 0-1 mark at home as well as in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
