Baseball Drops Two In Tiffin As Postseason Hopes Diminish

Aaron Miller (#39) socked four base hits for the Blue Streaks in the doubleheader
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Prior to Sunday's doubleheader with Heidelberg University, the John Carroll baseball team was in the midst of an intense battle for an OAC playoff berth at 8-6.

After a pair of road losses to the Student Princes, however, the Blue Streaks have fallen to tied for fifth place in the conference and will need a sweep of Ohio Northern on May 5 as well as some good fortune from around the league to claim one of the OAC's top four spots.

Game one was all Heidelberg, as the Student Princes put two runs on the board in the first, third, and fourth innings en route to a 7-1 victory.  The Blue Streaks led 1-0 after the top half of the first thanks to an RBI single by senior Tom Hickey, but that would be the only run of the game for the Blue & Gold.

Jimmy Spagna allowed seven runs (six earned) in 4.0 innings pitched, while JCU produced just four hits on offense.

Game Two featured much more in terms of suspense and offensive contributions, as the lead changed three times before JCU came up just short in the 10-9 Heidelberg win.

The Blue Streaks jumped on the Student Princes early with five runs in the first three innings behind RBI singles from Jimmy Spagna, Dan Potter, and Connor Marrero.

The home team roared back to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth, before Spagna tied the contest with a solo home run in the seventh.

Then after JCU took the lead yet again on two-out runs by Joe Veltri and Mitchell Herringshaw, the Student Princes struck the contest's final blow with a four-spot in eighth inning to take the game and finish the sweep.

Catcher Aaron Miller (3-for-4) and Spagna (2-for-4, three RBI) led the Streaks offensively in Game Two.

With two OAC games remaining in the form of a Cinco de Mayo doubleheader with Ohio Northern, the Blue & Gold will have one more chance to climb above .500 in the conference and perhaps snag the final OAC playoff slot.

With the losses, JCU slides to 17-17 overall, 8-8 in the OAC.  Heidelberg improves to 22-15, 9-7 in league play.
