Doug Hayes tried to slow Ohio Northern's momentum in a tightly-contested 141-pound bout
On one of the coldest and snowiest days University Heights has seen in a long time, the John Carroll Blue
Streaks hosted the Ohio Northern Polar Bears within the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Unfortunately, the arctic air was more suitable for Polar Bears than Blue Streaks as JCU fell to nationally ranked Ohio Northern, 42-4.
It was John Carroll's largest margin of defeat since a 45-2 loss to Cleveland State on January 14, 1988.
The Polar Bears are ranked #18 in the country and have won six matches in a row.
Already down 6-0 following a forfeit loss at 125, the Blue Streaks would be in catch-up mode right from the start. JCU sophomore
Jeff Holy came into the 133-pound match even at 7-7 against Ohio Northern senior Jeremy Jones who sported a mark of 11-11. Jones came out on top in the 133 weight class with a final score of 5-0.
Senior Doug Hayes kept a close score with Ohio Northern's Cody Harding in the 141 weight class. The two went back and forth until Harting used a reversal and back points early in the third to build an 8-4 lead. A furious rally by Hayes fell just short as Harting won, 8-7.
In the 149 weight class, perhaps the most entertaining bout of the night took place between Blue Streak freshman
Jordan Victor and Polar Bear sophomore J.P. Hoopes. Despite Victor trailing 6-5 with 90 seconds left in regulation, the third period was again the undoing of a JCU wrestler as Hoopes used a take down midway thru to provide the encessary cushion for a 9-6 win.
A change of pace came as John carroll sophomore
Terner Gott emerged victorious over Ohio Northern's Max
Brooke. Wrestling at 157 pounds, Gott is the #4 ranked Division III wrestler in the country. Gott produced the lone John Carroll victory by a score of 12-2.
From there, the Polar Bears simply took over. Starting off with a John Carroll forfeit at 165, Ohio Northern closed out the night with a technical fall, followed by two pins and capped with a major decision.
The Blue Streaks fell 3-5 overall as well as 0-2 in conference. The Polar Bears increased their overall record to 13-2 and 2-0 in conference.
