Box Score With a very young team veteran head coach Mike Moran was looking for some of his players to step up and lead the team. Enter Simon Kucharewicz.

Only scoring 19 points last season, the now-sophomore erupted for a career day to lead the John Carroll University men's basketball team to a 71-53 win over Adrian College in the Greg Richards '08 Memorial Tournament Hosted by Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

With the graduation of his top two post players from a year ago, Moran was looking for someone to step up down low for JCU. Kucharewicz answered the call and finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 23 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore shot 8-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-12 at the free throw line.

"Simon was ready for a breakout game," said Moran. "It was a great way for him to start. Hopefully he will build from this and have a great year."

Danny Wallack led John Carroll on a 12-0 run just over halfway through the first stanza as the Blue Streaks held Adrian scoreless for nearly six minutes. Wallack sparked the run with back-to-back layups with Kucharewicz taking over midway through the run with six points of his own. Defensively John Carroll clamped down holding Adrian to nine missed shots including five missed layups.

David Hendrickson led the starters with 14 points and six rebounds while newcomer Joey Vuyancih dished out four assists. Doug Caputo added eight points off the bench shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor. Overall, the bench scored 37 points on the afternoon.

The Blue Streaks held Adrian to .323 shooting from the floor and just 1-of-12 from behind the arc. JCU was outrebounded 46-44 but only turned the ball over eight times.

The men face a quick turnaround when they head back to Meadville on Saturday to take on Alma at 2 p.m.
